This painting depicts a young woman being forced to marry against her wishes.

John Collier painted portraits, dramatic subject pictures and landscapes. He was educated at Heidelberg and later studied art at the Slade School of Art. Collier was related to the Crawshay family. Many of his works were displayed at the Royal Academy from 1874 to 1934.
