This portrait depicts Maria Malibran (1808–1836), turned to the right, half-length, wearing a plum-coloured dress with ermine collar, off the shoulder, and a green shawl with patterned trim. Her hair is parted in the centre and swept back and upwards, and she is unadorned with jewellery. Behind and on the left is a blue-patterned heavy curtain. The artist appears to have been visually influenced by Raphael's 'La Donna Velata' (1516), including the hair, gaze and clothing. The violinist Niccolò Paganini is known to have attended Malibran's performances – the first opera that he heard in Paris was 'Otello' by Rossini, with Malibran in the role of Desdemona. Her brother, Manuel Garcia junior, taught at the Royal Academy of Music for over 40 years.
