Three-quarter-length portrait of Dods, who turns towards the spectator while his hands rest on the page of an open book. The gold of a watch chain relieves the monotony of his clerical dress while the scarlet flash of an academic hood sets the key for the warm flesh tones of the mouth and cheeks. A plain background gives way on the left to a classical bookcase with fluted pilasters.
