A group of three slum children in a dark back alley. Two boys are seated on the ground, one, on the left, looks down at the floor, his friend, to his right, looks across towards him. A girl stands on the right, leaning against the wall, a hoop in her right hand, an apple in her left. They are playing a game with pieces of stone laid out on the pavement. A bucket of coal stands in the bottom right corner. At the other end of the alley-way is a slum courtyard with more children and adults. A woman does the washing, some of which hangs behind her on a line, a young girl helping her, while a man looks on.
