A Roman sculpture of a man with curly hair and beard wearing a toga. His left arm is extended but the hand is missing, the right arm is also missing. The head – possibly depicting Septimius Severus (Roman emperor from AD 193 to AD 211) – is not original to the piece but is also thought to be Roman in date. The head is of white marble (while the body is a white marble with grey veining) and has a pronounced form of deterioration probably caused by mollusc borings indicating that the head was at one time submerged under water. The marrying of the different parts of the sculpture probably occurred in Italy before it was acquired for Chiswick House. This sculpture, (together with 88003180 and 88003181), were positioned in the Exedra in Chiswick's gardens – they are shown in this location in a pen and ink sketch by William Kent from c.1736.
