Malcolm Gordon was the son of Robert Gordon of the Aberdeenshire flax spinning business, Gordon & Co., which also had premises in Belfast. His mother was Maria Pirrie Barbour who was a daughter of William Barbour (1797–1875) who set up the thread works at Hilden, near Lisburn, in 1825. Malcolm Gordon started his working life at Barbour's thread mills at Paterson, New Jersey, USA and returned to Lisburn in 1901 to manage the Hilden and Dunmurry mills. He was a director of William Barbour & Sons and of the Linen Thread Company which was established in 1898 and became the largest combine of linen thread manufacturers in the world.
