Drake-Brockman was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1887 and rose steadily before retiring as a brigadier-general in 1920. He served with the British forces in China in 1900–1901 during the Third China War or Boxer Rebellion. During the First World War (1914–1918) he was twice mentioned in despatches.
