A half-length portrait, seated, facing right, of an elderly man. He has short, thin grey hair and a moustache. He wears a white muffler and a thick double breasted dark jacket with a small velvet collar. Across his chest, he wears a thin leather strap, and rests his hands on his ivory-topped cane in front of him. On the little finger of his left hand he wears a ring. Major Jonathan White, a native of Nottingham, was born 29th February 1804, enlisted in 1820, and as early as 1823, being only 19, he was raised to the rank of Sergeant. The Sergeant Major served in the first Afghan war, in 1839 in the 2nd Queen's Royals, and took part in the actions of Candahar, Kelat, Ghuznee and Cabul. Sources say he was 'particularly recommended to notice for conspicuous and gallant conduct at the storming of Ghuznee and Kelat'.
