The sitter was born 10th June 1927 in Harrogate and the son of Captain Victor Michael Walsh and Audrey Walsh. He was educated at Sedbergh School and married Angela Beswick in 1952. Walsh joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps as a Rifleman in early 1945 and spent the first two years in Northern Italy defending Trieste from Tito’s partisans. He was then posted to the Small Arms School as an instructor and then joined the Jungle Warfare School for two years in Malaya following the Emergency in the Country.
