A portrait of Major Edward J. Priestley, Deputy Inspector General, Royal Irish Constabulary in 1845. A small watercolour also exists, executed as a study for the oil painting. Priestly's uniform is a good example of a Deputy Inspector General's dress during the famine periods of 1845 to 1848. A bicorne hat with feathers is sitting to Priestly's right while he holds a general officers' 'mameluke' pattern sword with a gold decorative toggle.
