This view of Magdalen Bridge hung over William Morris’ desk in his factory office. Whether it served to remind him of his fondness for the city where he became established or perhaps the place where he was once kidnapped by students from the University as a Rag Week stunt, it illustrated the contrast between the traditional dreaming spires and the factory complex which Morris had created, both of which characterised Oxford. Charles E. Turner was an English landscape and marine artist, proficient in both watercolours and oils. He became established in World War I as a war artist whilst a serving officer. He continued this theme into World War II, capturing combat scenes and also providing the illustrations for the 'Illustrated London News', 'The Sphere' and even Churchill’s cigar boxes.
