This framed, painted stucco relief is derived from a marble relief of about 1470 by Andrea del Verrocchio, formerly attributed to Antonio Rossellino, currently in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. It is variously entitled 'Madonna of Claudia' or 'Madonna and Child'. The composition was popular with workshops of the time and variations on Verrocchio's original were produced, examples of which can be found in Berlin and Washington DC. This example retains its original wooden architectural surround, called a tabernacle frame, which was probably made in the workshop of Giuliano da Maiano.
