The carving of a seated Madonna and Child was commissioned in 1928 by Father Francis Burdett. It stood in a niche on the town's earlier Roman Catholic church for ten years. After a new church was built in 1939, the sculpture was removed. Over 40 years later, it was discovered in the town cemetery and identified as the work of Eric Gill. It has been on show at Glastonbury Abbey since 2011.
