The sitter is believed to have been a dancer at the Paris Opéra. Degas has used a controlled sensitivity in the pastelwork of the subject's face, whereas the remainder of the composition is imbued with a restless and more linear energy. An oil sketch, probably of the same sitter, is in the Detroit Institute of Arts, and a larger portrait in oil, for which the present work may be a study, is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
