This portrait is likely to be of Princesse Jeanne de Savoie-Soissons (1665–1705). She was the daughter of Prince Eugene Maurice de Savoie, Count of Soissons and Dreux (1635–1673) and Olimpia Mancini (1640–1708). Mademoiselle de Soissons was a member of the French and Italian royal families and is depicted wearing ermine, which only royalty and the aristocracy was allowed to wear. Ermine are part of the weasel family. They are found in cold northern climates in Canada, northern Europe, Russia and Siberia. This picture shows its winter coat. The artist was a leading French painter who, following an extended period in Rome, became the portrait painter to the French court in the time of King Louis XIV. He was made the ‘Premier Painter’ in 1690.
