This is an unfinished painting of a coal miner stretched out digging in a narrow coal seam. The subject of work and of Wales's working class communities were what interested the artist, Tony Evans. Evans knew the industries of south Wales (coal mining, tinplate making and other heavy industries) well. He became a full-time artist following his retirement from industry. He experimented with a number of styles including what he referred to as planar style, as seen in this painting.
