A portrait of Louise, wife of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The marriage was politically motivated in order to produce a male heir for Charles. A substantial dowry and pension were also offered to hasten the union. The marriage was a failure as no heirs were conceived and the pension went unpaid.

Louise is depicted here in a relaxed but rather sombre looking pose. Her greying hair is contrasted with her young complexion, indeed, Horace Walpole claimed that she looked un-regal on a visit to England in 1791.

Fabre became a close companion of Louise in the later years of her life and painted several portraits of her. He provided the foundations of the Fabre Museum in Montpellier, donating his vast art collection for the enjoyment of all. The museum also benefited from bequests made by Louise.
