Louisa Waterford is wearing a red velvet dress with square neckline in mediaeval or Tudor style. She is seen in a large stone-built hall with, to the right, her easel and a portfolio, referring to her own artistic practice. The portrait was commissioned by her long-standing friends, John Evelyn Denison, Speaker of the House of Commons, and his wife Charlotte. Louisa Waterford's dress corresponds to one she apparently wore for the famous Eglinton Tournament in 1839, as recorded in a sketch that she made at the time.
