On the morning of 27th August 1979, Lord Louis Mountbatten was fishing on his boat, 'Shadow V', off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland, near his family holiday home at Classiebawn Castle. The IRA detonated a bomb which had been planted on the boat, killing the 79–year-old cousin of the Queen instantly. His death was keenly felt in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight – his family home was at Broadlands near Romsey and he was Governor and Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight. This memorial statue was unveiled by Countess Mountbatten of Burma.
