The writer and poet Louis Golding was born in Manchester into a Ukrainian-Jewish family and educated locally and at Queen’s College, Oxford. His novels drew on his Manchester Jewish background ('Doomington') and his bestselling novel, 'Magnolia Street' (1932), is based on Manchester’s Hightown in the 1920s. The painter Emanuel Levy later adapted the novel as a radio drama. In 1936 Golding was invited to give a lecture and poetry reading at Ben Uri, introduced by one of its founders, Mosheh Oved. Wayner's 'Celebrities in Caricature' including a number of celebrated writers and artists, among others, both Jewish and non-Jewish, of the day.
