John Louis Bain was born in Stornoway in 1872 and died at home on Lewis Street, Stornoway in March 1946. He was one of the last survivors of the generation who had enjoyed the golden years of the kippering industry in Stornoway. During his early working life he was a clerk in the office of John Mackenzie, shipping agent and coal merchant.

Louis Bain had a keen interest in sports and was a member of one of the original football clubs in Stornoway. He was also a founder member and president of the Stornoway Bowling and Tennis Club. He served on Stornoway Town Council from 1925 to 1930.
