Alfred Munnings was introduced to R. D. Blackmore's novel 'Lorna Doone' by a colleague at Page Bros & Co., Norwich, where he trained to become a commercial artist. In his autobiography, Alfred Munnings writes: 'He told me of Lorna Doone, what a book for a youth! He was my literary advisor, and soon I was full of Tennyson, Scott, Dumas, Thackeray.'
