A preparatory model of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, full length, sculpted by Don Potter in 1961. The completed sculpture is situated outside 65 Queen's Gate, Baden-Powell House. Donald ‘Don’ Potter was a distinguished sculptor and teacher, whose pupils included Habitat design entrepreneur Terence Conran. He worked in stone, ivory, ceramics and most successfully, in wood. At 14, Potter left school and was sent by his father to work in a North London munitions factory. After three years, he went to work at the training centre for Scout leaders, Gilwell Park, Essex. He became a protégé of Robert Baden-Powell, who encouraged him in his sculpture. Potter carved, or built, several notable sculptures and structures at Gilwell Park. In 1940, Potter took up a post as a sculpture, metalwork and pottery teacher at Bryanston in Dorset.
