A three-quarter length portrait of a man seated and facing to the right. He is middle-aged, with greying hair swept forward at the sides. He wears a dark waistcoat, coat and trousers, and a turned-up collar with a cravat wound around it. At his waist is a buckle or medal of some sort. In his right hand he holds a scroll; his left hand is placed on the corner of a table upon which are two books. The background is a dark red curtain draped from the top right to the bottom left. The subject is lit from a window to the left-hand corner.
