The sitter was a scholar of Wadham in 1890 and Honorary Fellow in 1917. He became KC in 1912; Justice of the King's Bench Division from 1917 to 1934. He was Knight Bachelor in 1917; Lord Justice of Appeal in 1934; Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 1935 to 1938 and created Baron Roche of Chadlington in 1935.
