This painting depicts the view out to sea across Loch Papadil, a freshwater loch above a raised beach, just west of the southern tip of the Isle of Rum. To the left is Sgurr nan Gillean, the third Corbett on the island at 764m. There are the ruined remains of a well-appointed, single storey lodge at the head of the loch. It was here Sir George and Lady Bullough spent their honeymoon on 24 June 1903. Some 70 or so years ago a group of people came ashore at Papadil after crossing in a small boat from the neighbouring island of Eigg with the intention of departing the same day. The weather closed in and, wet through, with little food and no fuel for the fireplaces, they stripped the wood panelling from the walls and finally utilised the furniture in order to keep warm.
