The artwork celebrates the centenary of Lincoln as the birthplace of the tank. It depicts an uncompleted Mark 1 tank with male and female workers and the figures of Sir William Tritton, William Rigby and Major Walter Wilson, the team at William Foster & Co. who designed the first tanks during the First World War.

Inscription description

on the brick plinth on the north and south sides is the name of the company that produced the First World War tanks in back relief letters: WM. FOSTER & CO LTD ENGINEERS.; on the west and east faces are circular black plaques giving information on the dedication of the sculpture and naming the major donors
