On 15 April 1915 during the First World War (1914–1918), Lieutenant Mitchell was aboard the troopship 'Arcadian' when it was hit by a German U-Boat torpedo while en route from Salonika (Thessaloniki) to Egypt. The ship reportedly went down in five minutes, taking nearly 300 soldiers and sailors with her. Mitchell, aged just 18, was among the lost. He is commemorated on the Mikra Memorial in Greece. Many portraits of this sort were painted posthumously from photographs, as a family memento.
