Swanston spent much of his early career engaged in survey work, though gazetted to the 2nd Battalion 12th Regiment Native Infantry. For this work the British Government rewarded him with a purse of 500 guineas. During the Third Maratha War of 1816–1819, Swanston raised, equipped and trained a Division of the Poona Irregular Horse in the space of two months. At Corygaum on 31 December 1817, he was second-in-command of a force that faced the whole of the Maratha Army – some 28,000 men. Swanston's unit was completely destroyed, while he was seriously wounded and taken prisoner. He was the only officer who survived to receive the clasp for the action. When Swanston retired from the service in 1833, he was awarded an extra pension of £50 per annum for his good service.
