Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Picton was a Welsh British Army officer born in Pembrokeshire. Martin Archer Shee was a British portrait painter and president of the Royal Academy. There are two other portraits of Picton by the artist that are very similar. The Royal Collection has a three-quarter length version of this portrait and Pembrokeshire Museums Service has a full-length version, which formerly hung in the County Court, Haverfordwest. It is unclear which is the original version of the portrait.
