Lieutenant General Augustus Pitt Rivers was one of the leading anthropologists and archaeologists of the Victorian age. This portrait probably dates from 1886 when he received the honours of Doctor of Civil Law at Oxford University.

He is regarded as having been a generation ahead of his time and is often described as the 'father of scientific archaeology'.
