In 1858 Lieutenant Francis Edward Henry Farquharson was 20 years old and in the 42nd Regiment of Foot. During the Indian Mutiny the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC for conspicuous bravery. When engaged before Lucknow, on 9th March 1858, in having led a portion of his company, stormed a bastion mounting two guns, and spiked the guns, by which the advanced position held during the night of 9th March was rendered secure from the fire of artillery. Lieutenant Farquharson was severely wounded, while holding an advanced position on the morning of 10th March.

Louis William Desanges is known for his paintings of Victoria Cross winners. In all, 50 such oil paintings were painted by the artist between 1859 and 1862.
