Each of the roundels contains a group of three heads, the majority in three-quarter profile. Below the window pediments are the names of the portraits, which refer to writers and thinkers in branches of the humanities and sciences, and which correspond to the five subjects of the larger relief panels at the base. Braithwaite Hall is named after the late Reverend John Masterman Braithwaite, a former Vicar of Croydon.
