This townscape depicts a view of the Lever Brothers (Crosfields) Tower in Warrington as it appeared in 1987. The artist worked at Lever Brothers during the Second World War in the Persil Department, located behind the tower in the picture. His father also worked there, as foreman, in the oil-extraction plant on the other side of the river between the two World Wars.

The subject, therefore, has very personal connections for the artist who was often struck by the dramatic impact of the tower and its sense of drama, mystery and power. The artist considered the tower to be at its best when emblazoned with light and covered with steam. Although many people might not consider this a beautiful subject the artist considered this tower to have an almost unique grandeur.
