This painting is a fairly recent depiction of passengers aboard a ferry boat as it leaves Boulogne in France. The painting is typical of La Dell’s naive style. La Dell was born in Coventry, but raised in Rotherham. His first job was working at the Yorkshire Electricity offices on Rawmarsh Road. His first art teacher was his father Thomas La Dell who was an amateur artist, who had shown work at the Royal Academy. Edwin La Dell began his official art training at Sheffield School of Art, and at the age of 20 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. La Dell later became head of the Printmaking Department at the Royal College of Art.
