William Gill lived and worked in Leamington and London between 1826 and 1871. Some of his paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy. Gill specialised in portraits and scenes of everyday life, including children at play. In this picture he presents us with a romantic image of childhood.

Sentimental paintings of childhood were popular with the Victorian middle classes. Artists like Gill took advantage of this growing market.
