After the First World War, Bell reverted to a more naturalistic style. This cityscape of Paris, painted in 1921, indicates the direction of her art. At first glance, the painting seems to be a exact depiction of the Pont Neuf in Paris. The aim, however, is not to give a naturalistic description of the bridge but to examine the effects of light and movement and the patterns which result from both. The brushwork is fast and broad and develops its own dynamic, taking the work to the edge of pure abstraction.
