The finest of a group of related works inspired by Fragonard's summer spent sketching in the gardens of the Villa d'Este in 1760. The garden belonged to the Duke of Modena who let it grow wild, and it was precisely this proto-romantic charm that seems to have appealed to visitors. The picture may have been based upon the appearance of the Dragon Fountain, although characteristically it has been transformed by Fragonard's imagination. It was probably painted in Paris, soon after Fragonard’s return, as an imaginative souvenir d'Italie in which the artist attempted to recall the faded grandeur and dream-like atmosphere of the Villa d’Este.
