Marcel Louis Baugniet was a Belgian artist who is considered one of the most important avant-garde artists in Belgium. He studied at the Academy of Brussels with Magritte, before moving to Paris to continue his career. Returning to Brussels in 1922, his work became influenced by the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements. As well as painting, he created ceramics, furniture, collages, and designed stage sets. Like this painting, he often depicted dancers and sportspersons, showing their agility and athleticism through elongated lines and geometric compositions.
