View from St Catherine's Hill. The condition of the north gate suggests that the view dates from before 1764, for in that year the gate was partially demolished. The painting records the motte and bailey before they were landscaped in the late eighteenth century. Left of the castle can be seen Newport, the Church of St Thomas and the remains of St Stephen's priory. To the right of the castle gate stands the watch or 'witches' tower (which fell in 1830) with the centre of Launceston itself to the right.
