The reference is to 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona' Act IV, Scene 4, in which Launce is sent to deliver a dog to Silvia as a present from his master but the dog misbehaves, steals from her plate and is ordered out of the room. Afterwards Launce explains that Proteus' dog had been stolen and that he offered his own in its place. Here Silvia is seen with her father, the Duke, at the dining table and Launce is holding the dog.
