First World War image of wounded British soldiers on stretchers, walking wounded and dead bodies already covered in sheets. In the tent to the rear of the picture, surgical operations are being conducted on soldiers who, after the triage process is complete, have been considered worth operating on – many men, after a costly offensive, were visibly at death’s door and were left to die, preferably with the aid of morphine to lessen pain.
