The Holy family can be seen in the foreground of the painting on the flight into Egypt. Mary is with the infant Christ on a donkey and Joseph walks beside them. Around them are travellers, trades people, a fisherman, animals and trees. A hamlet and larger town are shown in the distance. Though the picture’s title suggests that this is a biblical subject, the emphasis of the painting is placed on the sprawling landscape rather than the religious theme. John Bowes, founder of The Bowes Museum, described this painting as, 'a curious landscape on wood with an infinite number of details'. It is not known if he recognised the religious subject matter.
