Born in Antwerp, Jan van Kessel the younger was one of 13 children of the artist Jan van Kessel the elder. Van Kessel the elder was a student and follower of his uncle Brueghel. He painted landscapes, still lifes, insects and birds in the style of Brueghel. Three of his children became artists and he taught his son to paint before he travelled to Madrid in 1860. Van Kessel the younger became a noted portrait painter to the Spanish court. He was influenced by the Spanish style of painting and painted portraits of Queen Marie-Louise, wife of Charles II, he also worked for Philippe IV and Philippe V. This painting has been subject to debate over the attribution of the artist. The composition of the painting is based on a painting of a similar subject by Jan Brueghel the elder painted in 1613, which was also copied several times by his son.
