The ethereal landscapes of Alessandro Magnasco were influenced by Salvator Rosa, who in the past was believed to be the author of this painting. Magnasco often populated his landscapes with monks, peasants and bandits. Here a ragged man on sticks converses with another, who is better dressed. An old lady, working yarn, sits on the ground with a boy, and in the centre is a friar before a tall cross. The buildings beyond may be a church or monastery. The visible red ground is a common feature of Magnasco's paintings. Magnasco achieved great popularity and his work was widely imitated.
