In May 1635 Rubens purchased the Castle of Steen near Malines. This view shows the medieval tower situated at the back of the house. There is a second version of this composition in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin which seems to have been used as a study for a large composition of a 'Tournament in Front of a Castle' (Louvre, Paris). This painting is probably a copy by another hand.
