Thought to be by Jacob van Ruisdael and Adriaen van de Velde (qq.v.) when in the collection of Paul I of Russia in the eighteenth century, this traditional attribution was only challenged in the twentieth century by the Ruisdael scholars, Simon and Slive. The monogram and handling suggest an attribution to Ruisdael’s lesser-known follower, Rombouts. The treatment of the trees is comparable to Rombouts’s 'Cottage among Trees near a Pool' (Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen) and the Hobbema-like cottage recurs in a signed Rombouts, 'The Cottages', in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
