Ernest Walbourne's idyllic scenes of the English countryside and rural life were very much in the classic tradition of Victorian landscape painting. Many of his works feature romantic scenes of cottages and country people, often at the height of summer.

From 1895 he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy and other major London exhibitions. His work was widely admired and sold well. In 1906 Walbourn married the artist Eva Knight who helped with the backgrounds of his larger canvases and became an accomplished artist in her own right.
