Robert Medley was an openly homosexual English artist who taught at Camberwell College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art as well as in Rome. He served as an Official War Artist during the Second World War. The semi-abstract rectilinear and natural forms in this painting are typical of his more abstract style. His work was difficult to access for the general public, and he rarely exhibited unless he felt entirely ready, which has perhaps contributed to his posthumous decline in popularity.
