This mysterious pierced sphere relates to the story of Icarus. In Greek mythology, Icarus fell from the sky when the sun melted the wax attaching his wings. It was a recurrent theme in John Armstrong's work and symbolised 'the World flying too close to the Sun of Knowledge and getting destroyed in the process'. Painted during the Second World War, the picture also refers to the threat of enemy invasion from the sky.
